What is your potential?

Try to imagine your real potential. No doubt you have a goal weight in mind, thinking you need to lose around 10 or 15 lbs. Realistically, in most cases that is just the beginning! One can take for granted how overweight one has become. Of course losing 15 lbs is going to reduce your health risks and make you feel years younger. Nonetheless, if you are serious about your body and your health, you might want to think about doubling those numbers.

Remember, the amount of exercise and willingness to stick to a balanced diet is in direct relation to results. There are no quick fixes! If you have failed to see any results until now, you are not committed enough.

If you refuse to turn your back on most of your eating vices, then I am sorry, you are not ready! Sure, there will be times when you can indulge yourself, but if your life revolves around unhealthy food, it will be impossible to break the cycle.

You have it in you to succeed, everyone does. You simply need to decide that you have had enough, and your healthy life starts now! Just imagine your potential.

The Scale… Friend or Foe?

Most people take minimal time to care for their body and know little about it. Many do not want to know how much they weigh, let alone take their measurements. But this is an absolute must for two reasons, despite the fact that it might be embarrassing. As painful as it may be, getting to know our body is necessary.

First, this could be a shocking eye opening moment. Many people are surprised how far they have let things slide. It just may spark that fire they so desperately need.

Second, we all can use a starting point; numbers for comparison for months to come.

What should we measure? Certainly our overall body mass is a great number to be acquainted with. But let us not forget to measure our chest, biceps, waistline and thighs. These measurements will prove crucial during those times when we lose in size and not on the scale. Our shrinking numbers will prove to be important motivators.

If all else fails, nothing is more honest than our own mirror. If you like what you see, keep up the good work. If you do not, then do something about it!

A little vanity never hurt anyone!

There is a big difference between vanity in private and in public.

Everyone can use a little vanity in healthy doses! Vanity makes us notice the way our body looks and feels and in turn could help us get interested in our overall health.

There is nothing wrong with taking an interest in our body and how we look. A lot of us feel guilty, not wanting to be perceived as vain or conceded. We need not worry; our body is a precious gift. So why be concerned about caring for it? In fact, how would you feel if a friend continued to neglect or abuse a special gift you offered to him?

Let’s try to keep our bodies healthy. It shows respect for our gift!

My Revelation

I quickly realized that diet and exercise are two totally different worlds. I had already mastered the art of eating so as to not store up extra fat, but monitoring my food intake was not going to give me maximum health benefits and to be honest, the body I was hoping for. After several weeks at the gym I could see how much dedication was needed, thus being close to impossible to keep up with all other activities I had grown accustomed to.

I pondered these self-analyzing questions: Where am I going to spend my time? What is more important to me? What am I going to focus my energy on? Am I going to just sit here and complain about myself or actually do something about it?

I have now bought out time I was spending on other hobbies and put it toward something beneficial. It is good to reevaluate your favorite activities and see how constructive they really are! I had to cut out the majority of my old hobbies and now I can hardly recognize myself in terms of where I spend my time.

Be aware of time wasters that leave you feeling depressed and even more tired than when you started. Yes it takes self motivation to get out of the house and go to the gym. But most people do not realize that although you are exhausted after a work out, you will quickly regain needed energy to get through your day. You are left feeling alert and refreshed not drained and lethargic like you would if you had chosen to mope around the house.

I still enjoy some hobbies, but I did have to give up many of my favorite time wasters. My body is one of my hobbies now and I have something to show for it.

Simple Humans

Humans thrive on accomplishment, which is why we usually only succeed if we see progressive results. The gym provides an environment that encourages us to compete with ourselves. If we take the time to document our progress, we can keep track of our accomplishments.

If you have been stuck at a certain weight for a while, it is no doubt discouraging. You may quickly reason “all this work is not worth it”. However, after a few visits to the gym, suddenly your regular weights seem lighter than usual. Words cannot describe your excitement as you progress while your body becomes stronger. Taking your measurements can also prove encouraging, since there will be times when you stop losing on the scale, but keep losing in inches.

Strength training provides both an obstacle and a goal. What seems to be impossible at first may quickly become manageable in the near future. Once you look back and see how far your body has come, you are sure to get the satisfaction you need to carry on.

Humans are simple; we need to see results to succeed. So dig deep! Push mentally! Strain physically! SURPRISE YOURSELF! SUCCEED!

Seeing results equals long-term success

We will not succeed without results! Logically, humans look at a situation in terms of what they are going to get out of it. So why do most fail to reach their goals? Many are impatient and selfish and often cannot justify the effort required compared to the slow results they are seeing. Their love or addiction to food outweighs the results, which leaves them feeling that it is not worth the effort, and they gradually slip back into their old habits.

Satisfying results are paramount for long-term success. So we need to choose a plan that best fits our lifestyle. It is the only way to stay motivated enough to keep slugging it out when plateaus hit.

Junk. Junk. Junk.

There is a reason why they call it junk food, because it’s junk! Learn to accept the fact that junk should be eaten only on rare occasions, if at all. Until we come to that conclusion, we will always struggle with being overweight. The effects of junk food are far too powerful, and we will only last so long on a diet until we give into our cravings. If we want to feel and look great, we cannot eat junk! At the very least start there!

Straight up!

Your hard work is finally paying off, and you are enjoying the benefits of a balanced diet. In fact, it is so noticeable that it has become a hot topic with ones you know. Most likely you will encounter the following individual; after sharing how much you have lost and what your secret is, they have an immediate urge to try to assure you that they are completely fine with being overweight.

“I’m happy with myself! I really do not care how I look! I am learning to accept it, and I am okay with it now!”

Can an overweight or obese person truly be content with him or herself? What would be the loving thing to do? In the most respectful way possible, remind them of the dangerous effects of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cardiovascular diseases, and an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease or a heart attack, sleep apnea, and osteoarthritis (wear and tear of cartilage), the list goes on!

Everyone has the right to be overweight if they choose, but you cannot tell me it does not bother them. “I’m okay with the way I am”, is just a pleasant way of saying “I’m too lazy to change!”

Unfortunately, food addictions, sedentary lifestyle and a host of bad habits are not only self-detrimental, but they set a bad example for children. It is one thing to dig ourselves into an early grave, but let’s not cheat our children out of a long and healthy life.

When are we going to grow up?

All of us at one time or another have been on the receiving end of that comment. “When are you going to grow up?” Shocked as we may have been, there is a good chance there was a little truth behind the statement. Yes, the truth does hurt! Ironically, the same can be said about millions who struggle with their weight.

Much like a child who objects to his parent’s suggestions, even adults at times make up less than reasonable excuses.

Suggestion: “Maybe you could read up on fitness and nutrition to help you get motivated!”

Answer: “Oh, I don’t like reading!”

Suggestion: “Okay just try to increase your vegetable consumption.”

Answer: “I hate vegetables!”

Suggestion: “You could take a few minutes each day to walk.”

Answer: “Walking is too boring!”

Suggestion: “How about the gym? It can be more exciting than walking.”

Answer: “I’m too busy to go to the gym!”

Sound familiar? Just to make sure, we all know kindergarten is long gone? Playing games and eating goodies all day long is far behind us, and we just might be faced with some less than enjoyable responsibilities from time to time.

It would do us all some good to abandon the belief that our cravings should be constantly satisfied. In reality, most of us eat like kings! We are completely surrounded by whatever our taste buds desire, and have become accustomed to saying: “You deserve it!” Although what we really deserve, is healthy food to build a healthy body.

Since when has sitting on the couch and pigging out become rewarding physically and mentally? As a culture we are seriously confused as to what classifies as rewarding one self. It is time to grow up and stop making excuses, we deserve better and so does our body!

Is your culture killing you?

Defining culture: “The customs, arts, social institutions and achievements of a particular nation, people or other social group.” Also defined as “The attitudes and behaviors characteristic of a particular social group.”

As the years pass, the more I adopt healthy habits and the less I blend in with the norm. No more late night runs for a Crispy Chicken at Mickey D’s, no ice cap and apple fritter or chocolate glazed donut at Tim Horton’s, no PC’s Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream or Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia on a hot summer day, no fourth or fifth serving at an “all you can eat” buffet, no Pepsi, no chocolate covered almonds or Miss Vickie’s Jalapeno flavor chips on Survivor nights, and only on very rare occasions would you find me eating one of Quebec’s finest creations; steamy hotdogs and poutine.

I am moving further away from the widespread attitude of “bigger is better”. Quantity is no longer my main concern; instead fresh good quality ingredients are what please my palate these days. Instead of coffee and a donut I would much rather go for an espresso and croissant, instead of a sundae or banana split, I would opt for a gelato.

Traveling Europe has allowed me to see first hand a variety of cultures along with their eating habits. We have been fortunate enough to visit Italy, France and England. While traveling, more often than not I find myself scanning the crowds and asking myself “Where have all the fat people gone? Oh… THERE’S ONE! Hmmm nope, fanny pack and camera… another tourist.” You can also spot them at a restaurant; they are the ones complaining that their chair and portion size are too small, and the pasta does not taste like it does back home. Or you might hear them above other chatter “What? Four Euros for this little bottle of coke? I can get sixty-four ounces of coke for less than that back home.” Well, big guy… the joke is on you!

I refrain from making generalizations, so I will not go as far as saying “Everyone from North America is fat”, but these obesity stats speak for themselves.

If you think those obesity numbers are disturbing, the following chart includes overweight adults as well.

Is your culture killing you? Some nations have produced a consuming culture where its inhabitants consume at all cost, even to the point of ill-health. These “bigger is better”, “super size it”, “all you can eat”, “free refills” mentalities have changed the way we look at food. Maybe there is something we can learn from countries like Italy and France not to mention China or Japan.

Instead of simply eating to fill the hole, why not eat to please the soul. Not everyone has the luxury of traveling, but most have the means and access to healthy fresh produce. Why not bring Europe into your kitchen and reap the benefits?

Many of us are eating just to satisfy our addictions. Instead can we make an effort to eat to nourish ourselves, looking to food to strengthen and revitalize our body? Come on people! Cut the junk! You owe it to yourself, you know you deserve better. You have procrastinated long enough, now is the time! Do not let your culture kill you.
