What is your potential?

Try to imagine your real potential. No doubt you have a goal weight in mind, thinking you need to lose around 10 or 15 lbs. Realistically, in most cases that is just the beginning! One can take for granted how overweight one has become. Of course losing 15 lbs is going to reduce your health risks and make you feel years younger. Nonetheless, if you are serious about your body and your health, you might want to think about doubling those numbers.

Remember, the amount of exercise and willingness to stick to a balanced diet is in direct relation to results. There are no quick fixes! If you have failed to see any results until now, you are not committed enough.

If you refuse to turn your back on most of your eating vices, then I am sorry, you are not ready! Sure, there will be times when you can indulge yourself, but if your life revolves around unhealthy food, it will be impossible to break the cycle.

You have it in you to succeed, everyone does. You simply need to decide that you have had enough, and your healthy life starts now! Just imagine your potential.

Straight up!

Your hard work is finally paying off, and you are enjoying the benefits of a balanced diet. In fact, it is so noticeable that it has become a hot topic with ones you know. Most likely you will encounter the following individual; after sharing how much you have lost and what your secret is, they have an immediate urge to try to assure you that they are completely fine with being overweight.

“I’m happy with myself! I really do not care how I look! I am learning to accept it, and I am okay with it now!”

Can an overweight or obese person truly be content with him or herself? What would be the loving thing to do? In the most respectful way possible, remind them of the dangerous effects of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cardiovascular diseases, and an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease or a heart attack, sleep apnea, and osteoarthritis (wear and tear of cartilage), the list goes on!

Everyone has the right to be overweight if they choose, but you cannot tell me it does not bother them. “I’m okay with the way I am”, is just a pleasant way of saying “I’m too lazy to change!”

Unfortunately, food addictions, sedentary lifestyle and a host of bad habits are not only self-detrimental, but they set a bad example for children. It is one thing to dig ourselves into an early grave, but let’s not cheat our children out of a long and healthy life.

Keep it simple stupid

Do not over complicate things! If it grows on a tree or comes out of the ground then eat it! You cannot go wrong with what God makes grow. In addition, do not forget about meat (thank goodness for animals)!

Just think of all the “garbage” you avoid by following that one simple rule. Generally the more man has mucked with it, the worse it is for you, so in turn the closer it is to its natural state the better it is for you.

Nothing, and I repeat nothing, will give you better results than balance and regularity. By this I mean, eat a balanced diet and GET OUT THERE AND REGULARLY BREAK A SWEAT!

If you were to choose a diet that persuaded you to severely cut calorie intake, you would run the risk of loosing muscle mass. People are often encouraged by the quick results they see on the scale but unfortunately don’t know the negative effects of their plummeting numbers. If you restrict either calories, protein or carbs for too long, loss of muscle mass will result and inevitably will slow down your ability to lose the remaining fat. That is why so many people hit plateaus in their diets and put on more weight after. This stands to reason as they have less muscle mass than when they started their diet and therefore now have a slower metabolism.

So how do you lose fat, gain muscle, while at the same time eat enough protein while not consuming too many calories? A balancing act it can be! Your key to success is this: eat a balanced diet and incorporate weights or resistance training.



For a quick and easy way to determine your own portion size, just follow these three simple rules:

    1. Choose lean protein like chicken or turkey, approximately the size of your palm.

    2. Fill two-thirds of your plate with fresh fibrous vegetables as your carbohydrate portion. If you prefer a starchy food such as sweet potato, rice or beans, then only add a portion equivalent or slightly bigger than your protein portion.

    3. Use a half-palm measure of seeds or nuts as a fat source. Otherwise add one tablespoon of olive or flax oil over your salad or vegetables. Cut these portions in half if your protein choice is high in fat such as red meat or fish.

Does healthy = bland?

No! Healthy does not have to equal bland. Two of the biggest culprits contributing to this unfortunate misconception, are the unprecedented amounts of sugar and salt in our day to day foods. This has led us to believe that the only foods that taste good are fast foods and highly processed ones.

Foods with alarming quantities of either sugar or salt are highly addictive, and if consumed regularly can easily leave one depending on them. When it comes to salt, we Canadians even outeat our neighbors in the United States. Don’t think for one minute you can simply boycott fast food chains and live a salt free lifestyle, because it’s everywhere! Why? I’ll have to leave that answer for my next post as I don’t want to get side tracked.

In the meantime, to illustrate the difficulty we face, make sure to grab a soup can from your kitchen and read the nutritional facts on the label. One of the healthier foods you can choose from in your home, right? Well… it still remains a better choice than other highly processed foods, but just look at those sodium levels! Many canned soups will give you upto half of your recommended daily requirements of sodium, so eating more than the serving size and finishing the whole can will be your daily requirement of sodium in one sitting! For more information on this sodium epidemic, Statistics Canada has done a study on Salt Consumption.

The good news is that taste buds adapt to whatever you throw at them. For example, how many of us really liked coffee, wine, olives, oysters or fine cheese the very first time we tasted them. Most likely those foods took a little getting used to because they are an acquired taste.

Well fortunately a balanced diet is much like building up an acquired taste for unfamiliar foods. Healthy foods do require your taste buds to adapt, but you will soon love foods that you never thought you would. Believe me it gets easier with time, and you will soon see your likes and dislikes changing completely. This is great and very important to your progress, because you won’t stick to anything if you don’t like the food you’re throwing down the hatch.

My Mission

I will be relating my experience, as I have progressively become more fit and healthy over the past 8 years. I will also include great tips and useful information from friends and additional sources, for which I will provide references if they are directly quoted. I wish to convey the most helpful and practical information I have come across, the same information I swear and live by day to day.

I hope to keep a straightforward format, in order for you to get as much information as you need as quickly as possible in hope of giving you the courage to begin implementing these suggestions into your daily life. Ultimately I hope I can spark your fire of motivation which is fundamental if you want to begin and continue to succeed.

My main focus is going to be on what you can do starting now to change your life around. For others who are already on their way to a healthier and happier life this will serve as encouragement and help you stick with your new habits. For most of my readers who are trying to bring balance to their shocking eating habits, you will quickly see how you don’t need extra human strength or heroic willpower. A balanced diet or lifestyle is typically made up of acquiring and applying the right knowledge, which enables you to make smart choices. That’s primarily what it all boils down to, making the right choices! If you CHOOSE to put the right things in your body, your BODY is going to love YOU and YOU are going to love your BODY!
